Signage company Designs worked with Applelec to produce lightboxes for a new UK MINISO

The storefront was created by Designs Signage Solutions which produced 84 individual lightboxes with stencil cut motifs displaying simple emoji-like icons.

The boxes were made at varying depths to give a 3D effect that brings the installation to life and fits the MINISO brand.

Designs chose SloanLED’s BrightLINE LED system to illuminate the stencil cut artwork. The LED strips are lightweight and deliver consistent illumination, an essential aspect to achieving the bright and modern aesthetic MINISO and Design wanted.

Established 27 years ago by Rob Daysley in a home garage, Designs now operates in a 48,000sq ft premise in Hull. The company specialises in event, sports, and building signage, and was approached to produce the retail installation for MINISO’s new store in Westgate Shopping Centre, Oxford.

The combination of backlit modern graphics creates a sophisticated retail design that will help leave a lasting impression with customers.

The new store is a part of MINISO’s European expansion, which includes new stores in Spain, the UK, and Italy. MINISO was founded in China based on inspiration from Japanese specialty stores.

The retailer sells high-quality household goods, toys, cosmetics, and food, often collaborating with brands like Marvel, Hello Kitty, and We Bare Bears.

The design director for MINISO comments: “Oliver Hokem and his team managed to do the impossible and turn this around in quick succession […] We look forward to seeing their excellent craftsmanship on the next one.”

Designs created 84 lightboxes, as well as printed media for the Japanese themed retailer

The final signs were manufactured from polished perspex and fabricated individual MINISO shopping bag logos.
Designs also installed 50sq m of printed graphics on temporary hoardings, and an internal large tension fabric lightbox.

Head of creative at Designs, Chris Murphy says: “The brief for this project was to deliver a premium feel and impactful feature to the shop façade. The combination of backlit modern graphics creates a sophisticated retail design that will help leave a lasting impression with customers."

Murphy adds: “SloanLED BrightLINE was ideal for this project, producing flawless illumination as well as being extremely quick and easy to install, enabling us to hit the tight lead time.”
