Minimum wage increase comes into effect
Millions of workers across the UK will now be paid more after an increase in the minimum wage came into effect on April 1st.

The National Living Wage will now be set at £8.91 per hour
The National Living Wage will rise to £8.91 per hour, which equates to more than £345 a year for full-time employees.
This will apply to staff aged 23 and 24 for the first time, having only previously been applicable to those aged 25 or older.
Workers aged 21 to 22 will now earn at least £8.36 an hour, 18-20-year-olds £6.56, under-18s £4.62, while apprentices must now earn a minimum of £4.30 an hour under the new regulations.
In addition, the voluntary ‘Real Living Wage’ will increase to £10.85 for workers in London and £9.50 elsewhere in the UK, but as this is not legally required, only a small number of employees have signed up to the scheme.
However, none of the increases will apply to workers currently on furlough, who will continue to be paid at 80% of their current earnings.
The wage rises will only come into effect when staff return from furlough and are back at work.
The furlough scheme is due to end in the autumn.
