Perspex Distribution liaised with Perspex International about the surge in demand for clear acrylic

As the frontline of NHS workers, health care workers and key workers up and down the country continue to fight against coronavirus, Perspex International has increased production of its clear acrylic by 300% to protect supermarket workers and pharmacists. The acrylic can be used to create protective screens.

Perspex Distribution, which is part of the same group ownership as Perspex International, distributes the Perspex acrylic across the UK, operating from five regional branches. Holding stock resulted in Perspex Distribution’s ability to respond to the first wave of orders for fabricators to produce the bespoke safety screens. Slightly further down the line, supermarkets were equipped with these screens within seven days.

As a UK manufacturer, we believe we have an obligation to meet this demand where possible and last week we acted immediately to increase production to meet the urgent requirements

To make sure that Perspex Distribution could keep up with demand, the firm liaised with Perspex International to start planning distribution priorities.

Bryan Welch is the operations director for Perspex International, and comments: “As a UK manufacturer, we believe we have an obligation to meet this demand where possible and last week we acted immediately to increase production to meet the urgent requirements.

“Achieving the production volumes required in such a short time period has required the business to quickly implement new manufacturing methods and practical working changes.”

The result is a 300% increase in production of the clear acrylic, following the change of schedules to prioritise Perspex acrylic sheets; production lines used for other items repurposed to enable production of the clear acrylic and shift patterns have also been changed.

Perspex clear acrylic is available in a number of different thicknesses

Keith Piggott, managing director for Perspex Distribution, adds: “We recognise the urgent requirements for Perspex acrylic to help protect key workers and keep essential stores open, and will continue to work closely with our customers and suppliers to do all we can to fulfil this critical demand.

“The health and wellbeing of our staff remains a priority and PDL will continue to apply the latest government workplace health guidelines. Procedures are in place to ensure all employees adhere to the recommended social distancing and hygiene advice in the workplace and remote working has been implemented where possible.”
