LED manufacturer makes environmental switch

LED light pockets manufacturer Mid West Displays has announced it will be ditching the use of solvent inks in core product ranges in favour of greener, more environmentally friendly inks.

Mid West Displays switches to green inks for its LED light pockets

The firm has completely changed the way it prints its LED light pocket frames in order to make the switch.

Previously, Mid West Displays screen-printed the frames using solvent inks which are made up of VOCs (volatile organic compounds) which can react with nitrogen oxide in the environment causing low-level ozone – a major contributor to global warming.

Water-based inks used in digital printing are dried using UV, meaning no VOCs evaporate into the environment. Mid West Displays has now committed to digitally printing their frames to allow for the use of more environmentally friendly inks.

General manager Clive Towe comments: “Using ‘greener’ inks is better for environment – but for us to be able to use them has meant we’ve had to change the way we print our LED light pocket frames.

"Changing the way we print our frames represents a significant change for the business, but we feel it is an effort worth making to support the environment.”

The change will reduce the company’s solvent ink use by 95%, with the hope of reducing its overall ink usage thanks to digital print technology.

The LED light pockets are often seen displaying estate agents’ properties, as well as in salons, shops and showrooms.

Solvent inks are often used for outdoor applications because of their durable and scratch resistant qualities, but the production of fumes is a downside for companies looking to be more environmental in their practices.

Eco solvent ink was developed in the 2000s and does not contain as many VOCs, but requires more heat to dry, limiting the materials it can be printed on.
