Women making a difference in the sign industry

Educational programme Make it Happen has experienced a 40% increase in women attending its courses, says founder Sam Armstrong.

The programme, which covers every aspect of sign-making, from flat-cut letters to totem certification, was designed to educate and provide resources to anyone involved in the fabrication of signs.

Alongside Armstrong is account manager Zoe Wilkins-Read, and sales account manager Katie Asken. From a company which is founded and run by women, Armstrong reflects on how the number of women attending the courses has steadily risen since the programme began in 2017.

Armstrong says: “It is about equality and balance and everyone has a part to play in that, everywhere. At Make it Happen, since 2017, we have seen a 40% increase in women attending our training courses.

“This means that our little company is playing a small part in balancing the gender ratio in the signage industry and we are proud of that; but importantly, we are grateful to the men and women in the industry who continue to support us to ‘make it happen.’”

Addressing the unbalanced ratio of men to women in the sign industry, Lee Eaton, Signs Express Manchester says: “The ladies have entered the building! Make it Happen is a full female force working within a massively male dominated industry but with the drive and determination to change that perception and they are clearly ‘Making it Happen.’

“We currently have an industry with poor education and accreditation schemes in place but with Sam and her team of ladies pushing the boundaries of innovation and gender equality within any business sector it can only aim for success!”
