A look through the window: retail fights back

It could be the case that the death of retailing has been greatly exaggerated.

Mirri is predominantly used in the luxury retail market

Sunny weather, a royal wedding, and a spring shopping bounce has seen better than expected sales in April according to the Office of National Statistics. The sign industry is doing its bit to dazzle shoppers with innovations in the way windows attract customers.

Mirri says its products are mainly used in the luxury end of the retail market and showcased the range at Retail Design Expo this spring

Marks and Spencer added sparkle to their windows in some stores by using Celloglas from Mirri to highlight the wedding of Harry and Meghan using its newly launched 3.2m single sheet of the product using Mirri colours. Mirri says its products are mainly used in the luxury end of the retail market and showcased the range at Retail Design Expo this spring.

Chancellors has transformed its window display with new window technology

Although some shops have disappeared from the high street, there seem just as many coffee shops and estate agents as ever. One chain of estate agents has had its windows transformed by the Pioneer Group with a video wall from Samsung, with colour calibration and a seamless bezel design, with four of their UD46E-A models.

The company says the design is held in place with a B-Tech System X bolt down video wall stand, and the display “elevates visual messaging and content with a seamless image and impressive clarity”. It goes on to say that Signagelive is used to “automate the digital advertising processes at Chancellors and run a combination of real-time property feeds on rotation, which can be updated from anywhere in the country by the team at Chancellors.”
Finally a new range of architectural window films was revealed by Avery Dennison Graphics Solutions at FESPA this year. The range includes films for solar and safety window film applications, giving installers a very wide range of choices when planning building improvements.

Solar Window Films filter damaging solar radiation and reduce interior heat

Oliver Guenther of Avery Dennison comments: “These materials can improve the comfort of building occupants by rejecting damaging solar radiation and shielding from excess heat. Safety films are also able to prevent injury from shattered glass, and there are films to enable simple removal of graffiti. Our goal was to provide architects and specifiers with a complete range of window film options in one place.”

These innovations are not simply window dressing as sales volumes were up 1.6 percent in April according to the Government, suggesting there is still plenty of fight left on the high street and opportunities aplenty for sign-makers.
