Praising franchisees’ hard work “important”

The chief executive officer of Fastigns International, Catherine Monson, recently visited the UK from America to praise high-performing franchisees, as well as reward Fasigns centres at the annual convention. In an interview with Signlink, Monson explains the key characteristics behind good management.

Catherine Monson has been chief executive officer of the Fastsigns franchise for eight years

Monson explains that praising specific branches that are doing well is important to keep morale high, and encourage workers to maintain a good work ethic. Monson explains: “I would say it is very important, and one of the characteristics of good leaders is to celebrate success and praise people when they do things well.

“That’s the human spirit, when folks feel appreciated, rewarded, and recognised, they’re more active and will do those things over and over again. Obviously in this particular situation we are talking about franchisees, but one of the ways I like to work as a manager of the folks that work at Fastsigns International, is that when people do an outstanding job, I like to praise them, celebrate their accomplishments and use them as an example.”

The American tries to attend the Fastsigns annual convention each year, and when in the country, makes sure to visit as many franchisees as she can, to praise them for their hard work and dedication to the network.

It reinforces good behaviour—one of the characteristics of poor management is just to assume people are doing a good job, and not appreciate them when they’re doing well

She continues: “It reinforces good behaviour—one of the characteristics of poor management is just to assume people are doing a good job, and not appreciate them when they’re doing well.”

Monson also insists that reinforcing hard work and success helps to maintain talented and skilled employees.

“Finding and keeping good employees is a challenge,” says Monson, adding: “It’s because of the shortage of talented labour. We need to make sure that the great people that work for us know that they’re appreciated and thank them for the great job that they do.”
