Ian Drinkwater completed the 26.2-mile marathon in four hours, 36 minutes and 53 seconds

Ian Drinkwater admits that he has wanted to take part in the race since its first edition back in 1981, and began an intensive training programme in December in order to be in best shape possible for the marathon.

His hard work certainly paid off after he was able to complete the race in an impressive time of four hours, 36 minutes and 53 seconds, with all funds raised going to children’s charity Barnardo’s.

Speaking after the race, Drinkwater said: “Seeing the exertion of the runners and imagining the thrill of crossing the finishing line made taking part in the marathon something I’ve wanted to do ever since watching that first race.

"The whole experience was extremely enjoyable from the atmosphere to the sense of achievement when crossing the finishing line.

The money raised will help towards Barnardo’s continual work in changing lives and I would like to thank everyone who kindly donated and showed their support

“Barnardo’s helps transform the lives of the most vulnerable children across the UK. Like me, they believe that all children deserve a chance to reach their full potential. I hoped that running and raising money for Barnardo’s would help them to continue doing the incredible work they do.’

“The money raised will help towards Barnardo’s continual work in changing lives and I would like to thank everyone who kindly donated and showed their support.”

Founded in 1866, Barnardo’s is one of the UK’s oldest charities, and has helped thousands of children and young people to enjoy a better life.
