Choosing the right sign-making tool

Sign-making is a skill that goes back centuries and is not a craft to be taken lightly. Aside from producing something that looks nice, signage needs to be safe and not at risk of causing injury to anyone in the vicinity.

LKH Tools offers a range of tools for different sign-making needs

Describing the process of choosing tools as often trial and error, Liam Hodson, tooling and machine consultant for LKH Tools highlights the importance of getting it right when it comes to choosing the right tool.

He says: “For most, a compromise is met based on lack of time and knowledge, opting for one tool type to cover all materials. This, however, is not always the best approach. The time taken to hand finish parts cut from a machine can be costly and the correct tool choice in the first instance would remove this labour-intensive process.

For most, a compromise is met based on lack of time and knowledge, opting for one tool type to cover all materials

“Single flute tools may all look the same, but subtle changes to the geometry and angles will make a huge difference to the final result. The material quality that the tool is made of and the machine which it has been ground on, will also make a significant difference to how long the tool will last and how sharp it is.”

To tackle this, the Crown Norge range of tools available from LKH Tools has something for each sign-maker’s needs. The various tools are dedicated to different material types and the range includes folding, V-shaped, radium, and ball nose tools as well as the single flute spiral tools.
