Greene King has 3,100 pubs, restaurants and hotels in the UK so this additional signage will help to spread the message for those who may be suffering in silence.
The initiative is the result of consultation with Crohn’s & Colitis UK and SeeAbility, both of which are working to educate the public on invisible disabilities.
Lisa Hopkins, chief executive officer of SeeAbility comments: “SeeAbility’s ambition is to make inclusion a reality for children and adults with learning disabilities and autism. This starts with ensuring our communities have welcoming spaces for everyone.”
We know that many of our customers have disabilities that aren’t always visible, and we want them to feel comfortable using the disabled toilets”
According to Crohn’s & Colitis UK, 50% of people with Crohn’s or Colitis have experienced negative comments for using accessible toilets, with 29% having been refused entry to one due to their disease not being visible.
Nick Mackenzie, Greene King chief executive adds: “We know that many of our customers have disabilities that aren’t always visible, and we want them to feel comfortable using the disabled toilets.
“We also hope that by working with Crohn’s & Colitis UK and SeeAbility that these new signs will help voice awareness and stop the stigma and discrimination of people with hidden health conditions.”
