Paddling for workplace mental health

Mates in Mind is an organisation which aims to support employers to improve mental health and wellbeing across UK workplaces and industries, with a focus on the construction sector and related industries.

The event will see a mass-paddle down the River Thames to raise funds for UK charities

Research from the Office for National Statistics has found that the construction and related industries are particularly at risk of suffering mental ill-health due to factors such as long working hours, financial insecurity from contracted work and working away from home.

As a result, the research discovered that the suicide rate among those in the finishing trades is twice the national average.

This September, Mates in Need will be present at a unique event in London taking place to raise funds needed to support work that addresses mental health in the workplace, where it will be the headline charity.

Regatta London is the first ever event of its kind in which fundraisers will take part in a mass paddle down the River Thames using stand-up paddle boards, kayaks, canoes and rowing boats.

The event is open to anyone with an interest in these paddle-based sports and has been created to celebrate the river environment whilst raising funds for UK charities.

My friends and family are thrilled for me to be taking on this challenge after what I have gone through with my physical and mental health – paddling what is almost a half-marathon

James Rudoni, Mates in Mind managing director, comments: “We are delighted to be involved in this first event of its kind on the iconic River Thames. It is a unique and symbolic event for Mates in Mind to be partnering.

“Overcoming the stigma and isolation so often associated with poor mental health can be incredibly hard work and personal. Here at Mates in Mind we understand the importance of sharing that difficult journey with others who can help and support individuals in overcoming personal mental health challenges in their own way.”

Helen Tyers took up kayaking three years ago as a form of rehab after she suffered a serious stroke. Commenting on why she is taking part in this event, Tyers says: “Kayaking has given me a new lease of life and I can’t wait to take part in the Regatta London.

“My friends and family are thrilled for me to be taking on this challenge after what I have gone through with my physical and mental health – paddling what is almost a half-marathon. It shows what you can achieve with determination and with the right support.”
