Since 1996, the Neon Museum has been collecting and preserving the neon signs synonymous with Las Vegas. The non-profit organisation has now acquired the now-closed Reed Whipple Cultural Centre which is located across Las Vegas Boulevard from the Neon Boneyard – an outdoor exhibition space housing more than 200 unrestored signs.

The 32,000sq ft expansion will double the museum’s presence on the Boulevard and will provide space for an indoor gallery, storage space for its collection of vintage signs, and space for classrooms and future office space.

Named after neon’s chemical symbol, work on Ne10 begins this summer, with the first phase of completion slated for the first quarter of 2020.

“The Neon Museum has been a wonderfully successful addition to downtown, the city’s cultural centre,” says Las Vegas mayor, Carolyn G. Goodman. “This expansion will allow the museum to continue its important work of preserving the city’s history through our iconic neon signs.”

Rob McCoy, president and chief executive officer at the Neon Museum, adds: “We are grateful to the City of Las Vegas, which continues to be a strategic partner in the museum’s continued development.

“In addition to a long-term lease, the City is also providing a generous $2.2m (£1.8m) grant to help support ongoing operational costs, enabling us to offer more exhibition and education opportunities for the public.

"As always, we extend heartfelt thanks to our members and supporters for continuing to make the Neon Museum the Crown Jewel of Las Vegas.”

Aside from its expansion plans, the Neon Museum is also welcoming a special guest to its site in October. Tim Burton, renowned film director and artist, will be exhibiting some of his fine art for the first time in nearly a decade.
