New signage to be rolled out for vehicle charges

Over ten years ago the Labour government legislated to allow local authorities to implement local road charging schemes in their areas in a bid to tackle congestion and poor air quality.

Whilst the only congestion scheme in the UK is currently in place in London, poor air quality is an issue in many urban areas which has led to interest in local roach charges. These are implemented in the form of “low emission” or “clean air” zones.

Drivers familiar with congestion charges in London will recognise the large red ‘C’ symbol on road signs in the area. The Government now has plans to introduce a consistent use of the ‘C’ on road signage across the UK to indicate a charge of any sort on certain routes, including toll bridges.

The latest route to receive the new signage is the Mersey Gateway Bridge where the signs will remind commuters of the bridge’s charge.

We’re taking the opportunity, ahead of the re-opening of the Silver Jubilee Bridge next year, to update the scheme signage across the board

According to Mike Bennett, managing director of the Mersey Gateway Crossings Board, the signs are being introduced as a result of a review of all signs ahead of the re-opening of the Silver Jubilee Bridge which crosses the River Mersey and the Manchester Ship Canal.

Speaking to the Cheshire Live, Bennett says: “There is no charge at all for drivers in terms of what they pay, when they pay or how they pay – it is very much business as usual.

“We’re taking the opportunity, ahead of the re-opening of the Silver Jubilee Bridge next year, to update the scheme signage across the board. We regularly review all aspects of the project to identify any areas where we can develop and improve the way we engage with drivers and this is part of that ongoing activity.”
