The 3D printed animal was unveiled to onlookers at an event at Andesign’s office in Sutton Coldfield by local MP Andrew Mitchell.

The elephant is a permanent fixture at Andesign, displaying the capabilities of 3D print

The giant elephant head is displayed on the wall to the firm’s office, where it appears to be bursting through the wall. Standing almost four metres high, the elephant took five days to print using the Massivit 1800, demonstrating its capabilities for signage and displays. It has a maximum printing volume of 145cm x 111cm x 180cm and uses gel dispensing technology to create 3D visual communications.

Andesign founder Andy Williams comments: "We're in the business of getting noticed. We have major international clients who want to achieve genuine greatness with their retail, display and advertising and this shows the incredible spectacle that can be achieved with 3D.

"It wasn't easy, and our management team worked like hell to overcome what we soon realised were unprecedented problems - we had to chop down a door of our spray paint booth, a room we can usually drive trucks in to.”

Since investing in the Massivit 1800 earlier this year, the firm has worked to showcase the abilities of the machine, which is designed for creating display type applications and signage, it is also aimed at wide-format printers looking to add this to their portfolio. Following its first public display at Drupa in 2016, only a handful of firms in the UK are currently operating a Massivit 1800, which retails at around £300,000 and claims to be the fastest 3D printer in the market compared to its competitor.

Garry Hassell, managing director at Andesign, which specialises in wide-format print and signage, comments: “We think we've taken the Massivit 1800 on a very challenging journey with the creation of the elephant and it's been fantastic fun if all a bit mind boggling at times. But we think there are even greater heights that can be reached within 3D and we are actively reaching for the stars and now have many of our clients determined to come on this journey with us.”
