Signs create vibrant reception for school

A primary school in Wales has had revamp of their reception area, thanks to some newly installed signs.

The new installation provides an eye-catching entrance to the school’s Victorian building

The area at St Andrew’s primary school was recently refurbished to create a visually-striking entrance, with Applelec manufacturing the metal letters that spell out the school’s name. The concept for the space was designed to provide a calming environment, but also to engage the children with creativity.

Applelec, the Bradford-based manufacturer of signage and display products, was selected by Newport Norse to create the letters. At 600mm in height, the logo was created in brushed stainless steel to achieve a modern aspect and to contrast against the towering, freestanding letter A.

The ‘ST’ section of the logo was fitted on top of the magenta ‘A’ alongside a hollow circle representing the full stop of the St Andrew’s logo. The centre of the disc displays a flat cut stainless steel star, reflecting the school’s motto: ‘learning together, we reach for the stars’. Running the length of the reception desk, the rest of the letters were finished with rounded edges to ensure safety for the low-level installation.

… the signage was manufactured with a double-sided finish, where the letter returns were meticulously hand shaped

Andy Armitage, Applelec’s head of signage sales says: “The positioning of the ST part of the logo meant the lettering would be visible from both inside and outside the reception area. To accommodate this, the signage was manufactured with a double-sided finish, where the letter returns were meticulously hand shaped and manipulated by our metal fab team to achieve a seamless and precise seal for the logo.”

Andrew Herrington, architectural designer at Newport Norse says: “The refurbishment had to be completed within six weeks and because of this tight timeframe, an efficient turnaround was crucial, which was achieved by a collaborative effort from Applelec and our regular contractors.

“Coordinating the procurement along with exacting size, style and finish of the built-up metal letters was a technical challenge and one that was met with good communication and craftsmanship from Applelec.”
