The importance of young people in industry

Enticing young people into the sign industry can be difficult, with some sign-makers putting this down to the lack of education and training courses available at colleges and higher education centres.

However, there are still young faces working hard in the industry, and this was celebrated by the Young Sign-maker of the Year award, which was sponsored by Roland DG UK, at the British Sign Awards. Promoting young people in any industry is important for the future, and this includes the sign industry, something that the British Sign and Graphics Association (BSGA) is passionate about.

The winner of this year’s award was Natasha Berry, who has worked at Printdot since 2013 after studying graphic design and media at Walsall College. Berry was recommended by her boss, Keith Milford.

Milford explains: “Natasha has created many eye-catching signs in her role and assisted on many major projects. She is very committed, tough, and ambitious and this recognition has been a long time coming.”

Berry has worked across many aspects of sign-making, including printing, design, and helping with the installation. The particular project which received recognition from the BSGA was an installation for Rasila, a beauty parlor based in Wolverhampton.
The sign created by Berry for this project used brick vinyl, Foamex, and Contravision. Despite her age, she managed the project from the beginning right up until the completed installation.

The British Sign Awards gala lunch took place in Leicester in early November, and celebrated winners of categories such as Architectural Sign of the Year, Wide-Format Project of the Year, and The Craftsman Award.
