Signs across the country are losing letters as part of a nationwide campaign to urgently encourage blood donation, and even Downing Street has been getting involved.

As, Os, and Bs are disappearing from the UK’s signs as part of a campaign to encourage more people to donate blood

The letters A, O, and B are being removed from key signage to represent the blood groups that are desperate for donations in order to prevent a national shortage, with Downing Street becoming D wning Street, and book chain Waterstones becoming W terst nes.

People have been taking part on social media using the hashtag #missingtype, which is trending on Twitter, taking the letters out of their names and in their posts, with businesses such as Transport for London, Microsoft, Tesco, and Nando’s dropping As, Os, and Bs to support the cause.

The campaign was sparked by NHS figures that put the number of blood donors at 40 percent lower than they were ten years ago, and needs 204,000 new volunteers to maintain a safe level of supplies.

Giving blood is simple and easy to do and will only take about an hour of your time

Assistant director for donor services and marketing at NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT), Jon Latham, comments: “We simply can’t ignore the fact that there has been a stark reduction in the number of new donors coming forward - a trend seen across the world.

“While we can meet the needs of patients now, it’s important we strengthen the donor base for the future. Giving blood is simple and easy to do and will only take about an hour of your time. It could literally be a matter of life and death for somebody else.”
