Floor to ceiling: creating ambience with LED

For some people, entering a shopping mall can be a daunting prospect with the crowds, noise, and frenetic atmosphere, so any improvement to the ambience is always welcome.

Looking up: the Almere shopping mall was the subject of an innovative lighting design using clear acrylic

One signage firm in Hull has recently completed a couple of signage jobs which enhance the confines of two different quiet retail centres: one in England and one in Holland.

Ino-Plaz worked on two projects—one at the feet of shoppers and one above their heads. The Hull-based creative fabricators of plastic materials was commissioned to design and manufacture panels for The Exchange in Ilford. The brief was to create a water feature illusion for the shopping centre’s escalators. Ino-Plaz used Paperlinx 25mm Clear Altuglas acrylic for the design which was aimed to create a wave-like movement in between the escalators. This was then edge-lit using LED lighting fitted into the lighting box produced by architectural lighting outfit Kemps.

Tim Loft of Ino-Plaz says: “The constant light transmission properties of Paperlinx Altuglas products ensured that we delivered this project to the highest standards and met the requirements of the lighting specialists and the end-user. The Paperlinx Clear Altuglas acrylic is a durable substrate with excellent constant sheet thickness. It is also easy to handle, it’s half the weight of glass; easy to clean and abrasion resistant.”

Ino-Plaz was also commissioned by architectural lighting company Kemps to get involved with a project for the Almere shopping mall, one of the largest in The Netherlands. The brief was to produce 52 light swirls which were to be suspended from the ceiling, on the side of the escalators and around the perimeter bulkhead. Each individual light swirl was specified at 120mm deep and the project involved creating eleven individual swirl structure designs, ranging from two metres to seven metres in length.

Paperlinx Altuglas 25mm clear acrylic was chosen for the application as it features constant light transmission so colours appear the same, irrespective of how thick the sheet is and whether they are illuminated or non-illuminated.

Each lighting swirl was hand-sanded to a frosted finish on three sides then mitred where needed to join the multiple sections, creating the longer swirls. The lenses created by Ino-Plaz were then retro-fitted into the lighting units supplied by Kemps and installed on site to create a striking and visually impressive display across the mall’s two floors.
