Covent Garden transformed into vibrant art display

A new installation at Covent Garden in London has seen the famous Market Building transformed into a large neon art installation.

Covent Garden will launch a two month campaign from September to celebrate vivid artistry

The installation has been headed up by artist Chila Burnam, who recently gained fame with her Tate Britain Diwali commission. The project has meant the market’s South Hall has been filled with extensive neon sculptures. 

The installation has been launched alongside The Colour of Creativity campaign that has drawn inspiration from Burman’s neon sculptures in creating workshops, pop ups, and experiences to engage visitors to the estate.

The ‘neon wonderland’ welcomes visitors to the market with a purple neon sign reading: “Do you see words in rainbows?”

Several neon decorations, collages, and uplifting words have been used to bring the experience to life.

SignLink recently reported on signage featuring love song lyrics being installed in Bristol and this installation is another example of cities using uplifting signage to welcome visitors back after lockdowns.

Burnam is passionate about heritage, sustainability, and waste reduction and these aspects are reflected in her art. To embrace her dedication to sustainability the artist has re-used her signature neon tiger from previous installations.

“I am so delighted to have been invited for this commission, I’ve been drawn to Covent Garden since moving to London to attend the Slade School of Fine Arts in 1981” says Burnam.

She adds: “It is this exciting energy and sense of magic that I’m capturing. ‘Do you see words in rainbows’ will be a celebration of my Hindu Punjabi culture. Bright, exuberant, colourful and kaleidoscopic, the commission is designed to bring joy, positivity and a sense of magic to the public.”

Catherine Riccomini, director of marketing and communications at Capco says: “Covent Garden has long been a patron of art and culture in London and we are thrilled to have commissioned Chila Burman to showcase her vision and positivity with a landmark new installation.”

The project which features neon sculptures of peacocks, snakes, and bulls can also be experienced online via a digital replication of the experience. E-visitors around the globe can explore the space exactly as it appears in London through 3D platform, Matterport.
