The British Sign Awards go independent

After announcing the launch of a new awards event for the sign and print industry, the organisers of the original British Sign Awards have confirmed it will still go ahead, but as an independent event.

The British Sign Awards are due to take place in November 2020

First launched in 2013, the British Sign Awards take place each year in a central UK location to celebrate the skills and talent of UK sign businesses.

Organised by ISA-UK, formerly known as the British Sign and Graphic Association (BSGA), the awards have sparked concerns in the past that association members receive an advantage or are encouraged to enter over other industry members.

Ray Hirst, creator of the awards works with a team to organise them each year and wants to assure this is not the case.

Previously, many people in the sign industry had the perception that the awards were the preserve of association members or that the members enjoyed an advantage

Hirst says: “The awards have so far been run under a trade association banner and, while we would have been content for the relationship to continue, this will no longer be the case.

“Previously, many people in the sign industry had the perception that the awards were the preserve of association members or that the members enjoyed an advantage. This was never really the case because we went to great lengths to ensure that judging of entries was anonymous and fair. However, the perception did exist and it was a problem.

“Now, as a totally independent scheme, we believe we can reach out to a much wider cross section of the 4000 or so sign and sign-related businesses in the UK.”
