In larger lecture theatres, staff are able to share content wirelessly with the new technology
The University of Edinburgh now has a wireless content sharing platform running across 150 of its classrooms covering four sites in the city.
After having wireless content sharing installed in its lecture theatres, tutorial spaces and classrooms for several years, the university decided it needed a more seamless and stable user experience.
Users at the university, which encourages a ‘bring your own device’ culture, had experienced a range of connectivity issues sometimes relating to updates to their devices, which covers all four of the main operating systems for smart devices.
Mersive Solstice was implemented on a pilot basis in a small number of spaces and following positive feedback, the university has standardised the Solstice software across the whole campus.
Stephen Dishon, development team manager of learning, teaching and web services at The University of Edinburgh, comments: “I don’t think that we’ve ever had so much positive feedback on a technology pilot as we did with Mersive. It was intuitive and easy to use for Android, Apple, Windows and Linux users alike.

Dishon adds that the technology is allowing teachers and students to interact more easily and democratically.
He continues: “We are already making extensive use of new Solstice features as they are added. Solstice Ink, allowing users to highlight areas on the display using their mobile device, is a powerful and effective innovation, for example.
“Using the digital signage feature associated with the Office 365 calendar facility, we can display room booking information in each room when the display isn’t being used for teaching.”
