London-based DOOH firm, Trueform Digital has signed a major deal which will see it contribute to the “digital overhaul” of New York City’s subway.

Ten digital totem kiosks have been installed, with more to be completed as the project continues

The deal is part of a $19bn signal and station upgrade programme by the New York Metropolitan Transport Authority (MTA).

Since the station was installed in 1904, traditional static signs have been used to provide timetabled information as well as maps of the local area. However, the iconic subway is currently undergoing a digital upgrade.

As part of the project, Trueform Digital’s US-based team worked over a four-month period to create ten digital totem kiosks which have been installed across numerous stations within the 115-year-old subway – with more to be added as the programme continues.

Each kiosk includes an outdoor digital screen, providing live travel information, local maps, as well as the option to display additional content, messaging and advertisements.

We are incredibly proud to have provided such an important piece of public transport technology to one of the world’s most iconic transit agencies in one of the world’s most iconic cities

“Our relationship with the City of New York was established some eight years ago and over this time Trueform has secured long term contracts and provided significant infrastructure throughout the city,” reflects Jonathan Morley, chief executive officer of the DOOH firm.

With almost six million people boarding trains from the subway’s 472 stations each day, the kiosks have been specially designed to withstand all kinds of extreme weather conditions, as well as “aggressive acts of vandalism” and can be monitored and managed remotely.

“We are incredibly proud to have provided such an important piece of public transport technology to one of the world’s most iconic transit agencies in one of the world’s most iconic cities,” Morley adds.
