Ultra-slim kiosk attracts the automobile industry

A “sleek” ultra-slim interactive kiosk created by digital display designer, Design to Production, has piqued the interest of German car manufacturer, Volkswagen.

Using Zytronic’s Projected Capacitive Technology (PCT) touch sensors, the design company has created a double sided 55” interactive display which has been chosen to be piloted in Volkswagen showrooms in Australia.

Design to Production director, Peter Gordon, credits the slimness of the design for securing the high-profile deal: “We’ve been manufacturing kiosks for quite some time; we know what impresses people; and it’s the thickness of the unit that is always the key. The slimmer that silhouette the more impressive the kiosk – hence the name, Blade.”

Using Zytronic touch technology was part of the Blade’s design specification from the earliest design phase. “For the Blade to be interactive, was key,” explains Gordon.

Design to Production found that Zytronic’s Zybrid touch sensors together with its ZXY500 multitouch controllers complimented the end-goal of a thin exterior as together they add only 12mm to the already slim 40mm profile of the unit.

Being touch enabled, the Blade in-built content invites users to tap an on-screen icon to request more information. A selection of brochures are available and the customer can have the desired material emailed to them immediately.

“It’s early days and there are a myriad of potential applications for the Blade,” Gordon explains. The firm is currently in discussions about using the kiosk to entertain children with interactive showroom games.

Speaking of the positive response the kiosk has received, Gordon says: “People just can’t believe the Blade is touch enabled on both sides – they couldn’t figure out how we added touch and maintained such a slim profile. That’s a testament to the projected capacitive technology that Zytronic produces – it’s market leading.”
