Billboard technology…for your house

Who would have thought that advancements in the sign industry would end up influencing technology that can be used in our own homes?

Samsung has designed a new prototype screen (not pictured) that uses super micro LEDs, which are mostly used for digital billboards

That’s exactly what has happened in the world of flat screen televisions, with the CES 2019 exhibition in Las Vegas showcasing the latest technology for screens. However, this new screen from Samsung is using technology that is often reserved for digital billboards.

Micro LEDs have been used in digital out-of-home advertising for some time, but now Samsung has created a prototype television screen that uses this same technology. The screens are modular, meaning you can create a television that fits to the size of your home.

The max size for using micro LEDs is 75 inches, but you can create a screen using these modules anywhere up to 200 inches across (if you have a house big enough to accommodate this, of course.) It is aptly named ‘The Wall’ but the LEDs are spaced slightly further apart and are not the super micro LEDs.

As the system is modular, the screens can be pushed together playing different content or can obviously be made into one large screen, great for watching films and your favourite series in ultra-high quality.
There is no set date for when this technology will grace our living rooms, but if you choose to invest in this technology in the future, just remember that the digital billboard down the street was the inspiration.
