Rugby World Cup campaign marks digital first

A new digital campaign that recently launched in London ahead of this year’s Rugby World Cup will mark a world-first in the Digital Out of Home (DOOH) market.

The screen broadcast coverage of Prince Harry and Jonny Wilkinson marking 100 days until the 2015 Rugby World Cup

Broadcast on Storm’s Piccadilly screen, the site featured a live Periscope stream of Prince Harry and England rugby legends Jonny Wilkinson and Will Greenwood at a special event marking 100 days until the start of the national team event.

The ceremony, which took place at Twickenham, the home of English rugby, saw Prince Harry deliver a few speeches in front of fans at the stadium. The Webb Ellis Cup was then placed into a specially commissioned jeep to start the UK leg of the trophy tour.

While rugby fans around the world were able to share in the moment via Periscope and Twitter, Out of Home media owner Clear Channel also displayed a broadcast on its premium Storm site in Piccadilly. Once the broadcast ended, fans were able to Tweet questions for Jonny Wilkinson using #AskJonny, with the best tweets appearing on the screen.

The special event marked the first time that a Periscope video stream was displayed on such a scale in the UK, demonstrating that although many have acknowledged advances in this sector, there is plenty still to come from those active in the market.

This event was also the first Periscope from the official @rugbyworldcup Twitter account, which recently went live ahead of the tournament that takes place in the UK this summer.
