HMYOI Aylesbury holds the longest sentenced young adult males of any English prisons and places rehabilitation high up on its priorities.

Already a pre-existing supplier of print and visual communications substrates to the prison, Antalis has played a part in supporting the sign-making workshops.

Kevin Johnson, head of printing for the Prison Service comments: “Antalis listened to, and shared, our vision to create a real working environment within the prison.

“They provided a fee consultation which extended right the way through the workflow, including advice on design software, PC’s, RIP, laminators, cutting and finishing, as well as the environment in which the systems would be positioned.”

The workshop is for offenders to produce signage for the wider prison sector. Additionally, on a very human level, it gives prisoners, who want to learn, the opportunity to develop vital new skills

Providing consultation, Antalis helped the prison to decide on the correct hardware investments based on its budget and needs.

As a result, HMYOI Aylesbury’s sign-making facilities now include printing, cutting, laminating and mounting technology, specialist finishing equipment such as wall and bench mounted media cutters, as well as a space to store media.

Granthams Graphics Technology, a partner of Antalis, supplied and installed the equipment. Antalis large-format print media specialists were then available to advise on media choices.

Johnson adds: “The workshop is for offenders to produce signage, not only for HMYOI Aylesbury, but for the wider prison sector. The equipment installed enables us to produce all types of display graphics, labels and signage, and we have the capability to cut and finish aluminium, foam PVC panels and over apply vinyl graphics.

“Additionally, on a very human level, it gives prisoners, who want to learn, the opportunity to develop vital new skills.”
