Banding together to help the heroes

Having discovered that the average time for a veteran to reach out for mental health support is four years, Help for Heroes decided to launch a campaign to champion breaking the stigma of mental health.

‘Cut the Clock’ aims to eliminate the stigma faced by veterans that it is weak to speak out when suffering and was designed to raise awareness of the issue so more people can reach out to loved ones who are struggling.

To bring this concept to life, Help for Heroes developed a ‘Stigma Clock’ to be projected onto landmark buildings around the UK. The simple design acts as a visual count down to represent the four-years it takes to seek support.

Having trialled a design onto the Tower of London, Help for Heroes fine-tuned its design, adding more detail and rolled this out onto St Edmundsury Cathedral, Colchester Castle and Clacton Town Hall – with the help of a few industry experts.

In honour of the charitable cause, Motion Mapping, Epson and PSCo banded together to provide the equipment and expertise needed to achieve the projections.

Discussing the process, Stuart Harris, creative director at Motion Mapping says: “Our experience of working closely with Epson and PSCo gives us a strong infrastructure that allows us to materialise requests like this smoothly and effectively, and we were happy to pull together for this project in order to create something memorable.

To create a design that was adaptable to each building’s unique size and shape, Motion Mapping used Green Hippo media servers and utilised multiple software packages to develop a storyboard of content offsite to be executed onsite.

Despite nearby streetlights and a “remarkably high spiral” at St Edmundsbury Cathedral, one Epson 12,000 lumens projector was enough to give the design a vibrant and clear picture.
