British icon gets digital make-over

There is almost nothing more iconically British than the red phone box, and it seems they are going to get a 21st century make-over by two leading lights of the digital signage industry.

250 of the new black telephone boxes have now been engineered at Amscreen’s UK base in Bolton

Clear Channel and Amscreen have joined forces to create the new phone boxes, which can be seen on the streets in the near future.

Amscreen, a digital screen solutions provider, has produced the units, which will include Wi-Fi and interactive maps, as well as Amscreen’s remote device monitoring platform.

Amscreen have now produced over 250 of the new boxes, and even made a point of using British engineers. Their digital signage dominates one side of the unit, and will also offer its range of public services.

Chief executive officer of Amscreen, Simon Sugar, says: “These 250 completed units represent a fantastic milestone for the business. In the development and delivery of these products, we were conscious of staying true to the classic phone box both in terms of his physicality but we also wanted to keep it home grown by working with British engineering talent.

“Because we are European based, it also speeds up production and delivery and ultimately installation. Our customers can be more involved and have complete visibility at every stage of the process.”

Sugar continues: “Our service doesn’t stop when the screen rolls out of the factory. Our after sales support and remote device monitoring platform also means that unlike the original phone boxes, every single element of these units are being monitored and measured 24/7.

“RDM is also the bedrock that is allowing our partners to activate and measure the real-time services for all customers in the chain.”

The environment is also an important factor for many businesses, and Clear Channel have partnered with Trees for Cities, which plant trees in urban areas for every upgraded phone box.

Marketing director at Clear Channel UK, Martin Corke, finishes: “We’re proud to be decluttering the UK high streets by removing ageing phone boxes, and replacing them with fewer, smarter units created by Amscreen right here in the UK.

“The New World Payphone kiosks offer valuable free public services and will create a lasting legacy for the local communities through our partnership with Trees for Cities.”
