Ink price hike warning from Sun Chemical

Sun Chemical, the world’s largest producer of printing inks and pigments, is set to increase prices this month.

Sun Chemical has announced a price rise for its inks and pigments

The company issued the price warning, blaming it on the disruption of some of the ingredients of products manufactured in its New Jersey plant in the US.

In a statement, the multi-national outfit says: “Sun Chemical will increase the price of all inks and coatings containing acrylic derivatives effective 15 May 2017. Disruption in the production of certain building blocks used in the making of inks and coatings, such as styrene and acrylic acid, will cause price increases of up to eight percent in the cost of all water-based and UV/EB inks and coatings depending on the amount of raw material used and geographical region amongst other factors.

“Other product lines may also be affected depending on the evolution of important raw materials such as nitrocellulose, distillates, solvents and soya oils among others.”

Print Monthly has previously reported on across the board price increases earlier this year for ink and paper manufacturers with an average increase of just below ten percent. Inflation remains around two percent meaning printers have either to pass on the increases to clients or absorb the costs.

Felipe Mellado of Sun Chemical comments: "Sun Chemical has been doing its best to minimise these price increases to our customers, but unfortunately the instability in the supply chain makes it impossible to sustain current prices."
The firm has distributors in Radstock and Bristol and is a member of the DIC Corporation group in Japan.
