CompuGroup said there is no guarantee that a firm offer would be made

According to the Reuters news agency, the combined operation would have annual sales of more than €3bn (£2.69bn).

While Agfa is known in the print industry for its wide-format kit and software solutions, the firm also has a range of other products in its wider portfolio, such as X-ray machines.

“The discussions between the companies are at an early stage. No response has been given to the indication of interest and CompuGroup Medical SE has not been able to verify or discuss any of the assumptions and conditions underlying its indication of interest,” said CompuGroup, which has given Agfa’s board a non-binding indication of interest but said it was not certain if a concrete offer would be made.

Agfa added that its board will now evaluate CompuGroup’s approach.

Meanwhile, Agfa has announced its plans for InPrint 2016, revealing that it will use this year’s edition of the event to showcase a selection of industrial products that are digitally printed.

Taking place from November 9th to 11th in Milan, Italy, the show will welcome a host of exhibitors from around the world, each keen to demonstrate how their latest solutions can offer various benefits to users.

Agfa will be just one of those manufacturers in attendance, with the company to focus on integrating print in manufacturing.

Tom Cloots, manager marketing industrial inkjet at Agfa, comments: “Industrial printing is a quite general term and embraces many technologies; in fact it has very little in common with the conventional printing industry except for the fact that it revolves around the process of putting ink on a substrate.

There is a clear demand to lower stocks, to offer personalised products and to be able to follow industry and fashion trends

“It is certain though that it will change many existing processes while creating even new ones; manufacturing of products has already drastically changed thanks to the introduction of printing parts of pieces.”

He adds: “There is a clear demand to lower stocks, to offer personalised products and to be able to follow industry and fashion trends.

“In essence we all aim at doing things smarter and more targeted to the end user.

“With inkjet printing technology and a lot of creativity, it is possible to re-think existing workflows and create new opportunities.

“We believe that the InPrint show, with its strong focus on innovation, creates the necessary platform where industry leaders meet and experience how to integrate new technologies in a manufacturing process.” According to the Reuters news agency, the combined operation would have annual sales of more than €3bn (£2.69bn).
