High-end hoardings for high-end fashion

The hoarding shrouding Louis Vuitton’s flagship London store has garnered plenty of attention, both in person and via social media, for its striking design.

A company called Talbot Designs is responsible for the work, specialising in plastic fabrication for various applications, from giant lipsticks and mascara props for makeup brand Charlotte Tilbury, to creating a curved Perspex screen as part of an art installation at the London Design Festival.

Talbot Designs also creates visually compelling acrylic domes, and these skills have seen the company complete jobs for Adobe London, The Royal Airforce Museum and now, esteemed fashion brand Louis Vuitton.

Images of the hoarding at the brand’s New Bond Street flagship store have been viewed almost 250,000 times online, with others sharing positive comments about the work.

The firm created 3D models of the hoarding in Solidworks, a solid modelling CAD programme, and constructed a small, full-size section of the façade at its production facility.

It’s up there as one of the most visually stunning pieces of work we have done to date

Working towards a Christmas deadline, Talbot Designs used six tonnes of specially formulated clear UV and IMPACT resistant PET G reverse sprayed with colour-matched paint, created specifically for this project, to create 180 diamond shapes. Each shape, measuring 3m x 1.7m, then had to be fitted to the hoarding’s main structure.

The total length of the hoarding measured over 60m long and 6m high and was measured and installed using a laser system to ensure accuracy and consistency of the pattern.

Richard Woolff, managing director of Talbot Designs, says the client was “extremely happy” with the façade and called it a “big success.”

He adds: “We were very happy with the outcome of overall scheme. It’s up there as one of the most visually stunning pieces of work we have done to date. The main aim is always to make sure the client is satisfied, and we had a lot of encouraging remarks as the scheme progressed.”
