Toyota produces Supra-inspired wrap for charity

Toyota GB is celebrating the launch of the new Supra and its distinct red camo wrap, by creating a limited edition run of wrapping paper in aid of Crisis at Christmas in the UK.

A limited edition run of the wrapping paper, featuring the now-iconic Supra camo pattern, is being sold via Crowdfunder at £5 for four sheets, each sheet measuring 695mm x 1000m with all profits going to Crisis UK to support its Crisis at Christmas programme.

The seasonal wrap is printed on recycled Satimat Green silk paper at 115gsm and features the red, white and black colours of Toyota Gazoo Racing, with an A90 reference that Supra enthusiasts will recognise as the new model’s chassis code. The paper was printed by Coventry-based Acorn Printing, which also specialises in signage.

12 years in the making, the prototype for the all-new Toyota Supra made its world debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed back in July, adorning the black, red and white camo livery that paid tribute to the Toyota TS050 that delivered the manufacturer’s first Le Mans win.

When the prototype was first revealed, head of art at Toyota Europe Dan Beckett, explained to Motor 1 the idea behind the camo design. He says: “During our research we looked at the dazzle camouflage applied to battle ships in the First World War. The effect of these bold, intersecting geometric patterns was not to hide the boat’s existence but disguise its shape and even the direction it was facing. So that was a great place to start.

“But we also drew inspiration from the Toyota Gazoo Racing livery, which uses large black and red trapezoidal shapes set on a white background. And the most recognisable visual cue in motorsport – the waving chequered flag. Finally, we added the A90 chassis code so that people in the know would recognise that the car underneath was the next-generation Supra.”

The 2020 Toyota Supra will be officially revealed in January when the wraps come off at the 2019 Detroit Auto Show.
