Bringing Routing In-house

Jo Golding asks: “Is it worth it for a sign-maker to bring routing in-house and how can your solutions help them set themselves apart in the market?”

Complete control

The value of bringing routing in-house has been well-documented by the countless number of successful installations of CNC routers that have taken place globally over the years. Perhaps the most notable and largest number of these installations can be found at signage, digital printing, and print finishing companies that have opted for in-house routing technology.

Bringing routing in-house, as opposed to outsourcing, enables complete control over potential variables such as the quality of output and the reliability of delivery to meet valued customers’ requirements. Furthermore, with the cost of materials becoming ever-more costly, keeping routing in-house can enable better control over issues such as material wastage and scrap rates. The need to ensure that the accuracy of the routing/cutting process is right at the first time of asking will help to achieve this.

By comparison with companies that have spent inordinate amounts of money on outsourcing routing requirements, those that have invested in CNC routing technology have seen a full return in as little as four years.

For less than the annual cost of one experienced employee, therefore, signage companies can invest in an ultra-reliable and high-productivity single-operator solution that will work relatively problem-free for many years.

There are a number of factors that set AXYZ International apart from other leading suppliers of CNC routing solutions. For example, the company has changed the concept of routing speed and machine configurability, with among its greatest strengths an ability to configure machines to suit virtually any manufacturing requirement, from specialist one-off to high-volume projects. There are currently a staggering 366,918 different machine configurations from which companies can choose, coupled with both standard and optional machining options such as proprietary machine controllers, customised automatic and manual tool-change systems, numerous routing heads and knife-cutting tools, and camera-assisted routing/cutting systems.

The next step

Alex White, managing director, Blackman and White

Blackman and White has been at the forefront of routing and cutting technology for more than 45 years, and by working closely with our customers and other partners we have developed a range of routers and cutters that meet the specific needs of the signage industry.

This includes the custom Orion, Genesis, and Master Cut as well as the VersaTech range. Customers can use them to cut materials ranging from the softest fabric or leather rolled materials to rigid materials such as acrylic and high-strength Kevlar. The range is also designed to help production teams work faster, more accurately, and reduce waste. And it is not just about offering clients a variety of solutions, it is about having a workflow that is consistent, accurate, and fast. The customer demanded lead time often precludes the necessary time involved in putting a job out for sub-contract finishing, not to mention the possibility of an error in the final cut or an inadequate finish quality necessitating a costly reduction in price and perhaps the loss of a valuable client.

Bringing finishing in-house with an industry-proven solution like a B and W router/cutter is the logical next step to investing in your wide-format sign-making capability—it is the only real way to guarantee your customers the speed, quality, and reliability they expect, time after time.

Multi-functional

Julian Sage, managing director, Complete CNC Solutions

Sign-makers have always sought to bring processes in-house, usually to lower costs and often for the purposes of control. Things have changed a little though. These days, bringing a process in-house usually means acquiring the hardware required to do it. The question then becomes, what else can that hardware do for me?

We have dealt with this question a lot recently. Since launching the 2017 Protek Unico TT, we have entertained lots of enquires from customers who want to move routing under their own roof, but who realise that the Unico TT is also a fully featured digital cutter and print finishing system. That makes the numbers even more compelling.

There is a basic equation to satisfy when moving processes aboard and it primarily revolves around keeping hardware busy enough to pay its way. That equation is much easier to satisfy when the hardware is multi-talented.

In other words, the more it does, the easier it is to keep busy and the more attractive the paybacks.

The Unico TT from Protek is a perfect system for those looking to bring routing in-house

The Unico TT from Protek is a perfect system for those looking to bring routing in-house. One of the most attractive of its deep capabilities is its ability to finish what it starts, literally. The output from the Unico TT comes off the bed ready to use. There is no need for additional finishing stages.

It is a clean machine too and that means it is not disruptive for a company on routing’s learning path to integrate into established production environments. It is easy to work with, deals with a simply staggering range of materials, and it has tools for processing those materials in ways that add enormous value.

Bringing routing in-house behind a Protek Unico TT accomplishes more than just control and delivers more than savings alone. It opens the doors to a huge range of commercial opportunities and makes existing print-based operations more profitable and attractive too.

Meeting expectations

Ian Croft, process manager, advanced materials division, Biesse Group UK

Today we live in a world of ‘I want it now’, be it online shopping, coffee, or burgers. For any business wanting to meet the expectations of demanding customers, the ability to process products under one’s own roof has never been more important.

The ability of today’s machinery to process products and deliver to the customer with minimal delay is paramount, not only in terms of turnaround times, but also of absolute quality and accuracy. Installing a CNC router may seem a daunting challenge to first time buyers, not only because of the high investment costs, but also in the resources required to implement the machine into the production facility.

Biesse Group UK—a subsidiary of Biesse Spa, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of CNC routers—endeavour to make the process as easy as possible from start to finish. With a dedicated sales team focused solely on the sign industry and more than 20 technicians based in the UK, we are best placed to provide a total service to our customers.

Our range of machinery is second to none. We are dedicated to providing the latest technology with fully certified safety features such as perimeter guarding, ballistic curtains around the tooling, and superior dust extraction systems, so our machines really are best in class.

We offer machines capable of processing all common materials used in the sign industry. Our machines have some unique features, such as high flow vacuum systems allowing very small components to be processed, high speed spindles up to 36,000rpm, and air cooling to the tool as well as anti-static jets to ensure clean cut and long tool life. Combined with our robust and rigid machine beds, we can further ensure that the parts processed will benefit from vibration cutting.

Camera recognition and knife technology can be fitted to the router giving the user a complete processing solution in one machine.

You can see our latest machine, the Rover A at the forthcoming Sign and Digital UK, as well as our entry level Rover J, both of which will be demonstrating various processes associated with the sign industry.
