Modular Signage Systems

If there is one trend that is here to stay, it is personalisation. For signage, that means a flexible solution is key. Jo Golding explores modular signage systems

In the right direction

Modular signage systems come in all shapes and sizes, and are used for many different reasons. Whether it is a wayfinding sign in a museum or an informative sign in a university, for example, what makes modular signage systems stand out is their flexibility.

Modular signs are composed of different units, making them easier to assemble, rearrange, and then also take apart. For exhibitions and other types of events, where easy construction and deconstruction is essential, the modular signage system is definitely one to consider.

In light of this, I have delved deeper into the sector to look at the latest systems on offer, what the benefits are, and whether demand for modular systems will grow throughout the year.

For Kieran Dallow, marketing manager at Innotech Digital, the market is heading in the right direction. He says: “In the world of personalisation and customisation, modular systems are the way things are going. Companies are ever more aware of the need to differentiate and a common display product is often avoided in preference for a custom-built display. It is therefore highly likely that the demand for modular systems is only going to rise.”

In the world of personalisation and customisation, modular systems are the way things are going

Innotech Digital’s freestanding modular display system allows users to create a bespoke display using a simple, four channel information post crafted in anodized aluminium. It offers a 360-degree, fully interactive experience for end-users, and the company says the system is “extremely sturdy.”

Innotech Digital’s freestanding modular display can be used with accessories such as iPad holders and banner arm sets

A variety of accessories can be added including snap frames, literature holders, banners, shelving poster frames, tablet holders, and top headers, resulting in a fully customisable solution to suit different companies’ differing requirements.

Dallow comments on the biggest benefits of using this type of system: “It means that printers can offer a completely customised solution for their customers, but not have the worry of building displays from scratch.

“Turnaround times are significantly reduced as nothing has to be made from scratch. No investment is required in high-tech machinery or skills, as it is a case of piecing together components. It is also easier to transport as it can be set up on site and doesn’t have to be pre-built in a factory.”

Robust solution

Signbox is another company offering a solution in this area—its HB modular sign system. The system consists of strong, lightweight, extruded interchangeable aluminium profiles, and is described by the company as being a “robust” and “flexible” solution.

With Signbox’s HB modular sign system, each profile can be independently replaced to change its message

It is designed for environments such as corporate and government headquarters, colleges and universities, museums, libraries and art facilities, sports centres, healthcare industries, and law courts.

Profiles are held in place by integral dovetails and each profile can be independently replaced to change its message. Signs are 6mm thick, with no visible frames or fixings, and the thickness is not affected whether you have single or double-sided signs. Also because it is frameless, there is no limit to the size of the sign.

Signkit Rod, by Signbox, can be used to construct reception directory signs over 4,000mm high

Signbox explains how the assembly of the system is simple: “The HB Modular Sign System is easy to assemble and dismantle—once you know how. A discreet locking strip is concealed within the 6mm thickness and there are no evident fastenings or fixings that could be undone with conventional tools. The concealed locking strip simply slides out by being pushed by a pin through a small hole located in the bottom profile.”

Signbox also offers to the market its Signkit system—a collection of components designed to interface with a wide range of materials from timber to acrylics. Each component is manufactured from aluminium, brass, or stainless steel, and is available in a series of anodised, polished, satin, and bead blasted finishes.

For directory signage in multi-tenanted landmark buildings, Signbox advises that it is best to choose the Rod solution, saying it is a “highly adaptable, flexible, and incredibly strong commercial sign system designed to display graphics.”

Project Lumos and Lumos² are illuminated signage solutions, and the Project panel supports enhanced displays and interior and exterior spaces. There are also wall mounted signage solutions, Signslot and Signblock. Xblock is a version of Signblock that is machined from an extruded section in a satin anodised finish. Signbox says it is a cost-effective signage solution for wall mounted signs with a standard slot to accommodate panels with a thickness of up to 8mm. It is designed to support acrylic ‘easy access’ holders.

A statement on Signbox’s website says: “Rest assured there’s a Signkit component for every application, environment, and budget, so take a closer look at these specialist components for cutting edge commercial signage at Signboxshop.”

Suits all requirements

Spandex also offers a range of modular sign systems, including the interior systems Slatz, Slim Slatz, and Insertz. In its brochure, Spandex says: “Whether it’s wall mounted, suspended, projecting, desk mounted or simple paper graphic displays, our systems can adapt and fit into a wide range of commercial environments such as hospitals, offices, hotels, colleges, schools, sports centres, government buildings, retail, and motorsport garages.”

Spandex’s Slim Slatz has an assembled profile of less than 8mm

Slatz is ideal for wayfinding and allows you to achieve a uniform look throughout an entire building. It can be used to make simple office door plates as well as complex, multi-column directional signage. Engraver Slatz hold rigid materials up to 1.5mm thick and can be updated regularly. Sheet aluminium can be used to achieve a more sophisticated look and engraved plastics allow you to incorporate braille and tactile signage. Paper graphics can be used as a cost-effective solution using a home or office printer.

Spandex’s Insertz is great for signs and graphics that require frequent updating and can be changed with simple suction key

Slatz is also used as a desk signage solution, which can be a nice complement to the rest of the signage in the building. Desk signs are available in the triangle format and plastic stands are available which allow you to turn some faceplates into a desk sign.

Slim Slatz, as you would imagine, is a slimline version of Slatz with an assembled profile of less than 8mm. This results in a cleaner, more modern appearance—similarly to the way a thin flat screen television revolutionised the market. Top and bottom faceplates fit flush to the mounting surface, which conceals the inner workings of the directory. Slim Slatz faceplates are available in depths of 20, 40, 60, and 80mm.

Spandex says: “Slim Slatz co-ordinates beautifully with every other system in the Spandex range which means that even the smallest interior sign can complement the largest exterior identity programme.”

Insertz is also great for signs and graphics that require frequent updating and can be changed with a suction key.

The anti-glare polycarbonate cover protects against unwelcome tampering and enhances the appearance of your graphics. Spandex also has a range of exterior sign systems that you can enquire about to find out more.

It is clear that there are a range of options for modular signage systems so if you are looking for something practical, cost-effective, and stylish at the same time, there is a solution out there for you.
