The Falkirk branch of Signs Express has helped to map out a part of British history, thanks to their role in the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo.
This year marks the centenary of the first ever landing of a plane on the deck of a moving ship. It is the chosen theme of this year’s event, to celebrate the bravery and achievement of such a task. It was the start of aircraft carrier operations, and procedures that we use today.
For such a prestigious event to run smoothly, Signs Express (Falkirk) were drafted in to provide all of the signage and graphics to inform the public and the visitors.
Steve McMurray, who is the owner of the Falkirk branch, comments: “It is such a great honour to be part of such an extraordinary celebration that is now ingrained in Edinburgh’s culture. We sincerely hope that everyone who visits the Tattoo has an amazing time, just as we did when helping out preparing for the event.”

The Tattoo is taking place across most of August in Edinburgh, and Signs Express created graphics that wrapped a portacabin construction to celebrate the 100 years of aviation history. The firm also designed and fitted signage that was above the entrance to the esplanade of the Edinburgh Castle, which has already welcomed thousands and thousands of visitors. The Tattoo’s theme is evident across all of the graphics.
Captain McGinley of the Royal Navy Headquarters in Scotland, finishes: “This year (2017) is the Royal Navy’s Lead Year at the Tattoo and it coincides with the Centenary of the first ever landing of a plane on the deck of a moving ship, performed by Squadron Commander Edwin Dunning in Scapa Flow.
“That daring achievement was the start of aircraft carrier operations and that is the theme we’re celebrating. The large graphics which Signs Express placed high above the entrance to the esplanade really helps to sell that theme and we worked very closely with Steve and his team to achieve the desired effect, even making some modifications on their recommendation.
“They’ve been a very professional organisation and we’re incredibly grateful for their efforts which involved some very late nights and working on a tight timescale. I would be very happy to work with them again on a project.”
